Winter Care for Your Split AC in Udaipur: A Simple Checklist

How to look after your split AC during Udaipur's cooler months: safe cleaning steps, what to switch off, what to leave to a technician, and when to book.

By November, most homes and shops in Udaipur have switched their ACs off for the season. Mornings and nights turn cool, and the AC sits unused for weeks. What you do now decides how the unit behaves when the first 40+ °C days return in spring.

This checklist covers what you can safely do yourself and what is better left to a trained technician. Nothing here needs you to open the unit or climb anywhere.

Why an idle AC still needs attention

An AC that is switched off is not a harmless AC. Three things tend to happen over the cooler months:

  • Dust settles. Udaipur's dry, dusty air coats the filters and the indoor coil. Dust that sits on a damp surface turns into a sticky layer that blocks airflow.
  • Moisture stays inside. If the unit was running until recently, the coil and drain tray can stay damp. That is how the musty smell some people notice in the first week of summer starts.
  • Pests move in. Wasps, lizards and insects like the quiet space around outdoor units and drain pipe ends.

On our service visits, cleaning and servicing are the jobs we see most often, and many of them trace back to an AC that was shut down for months without any preparation. A little effort now avoids a lot of that.

Step 1: Clean the indoor filters

This is the single most useful thing a homeowner can do, and it is safe.

  1. Switch the AC off with the remote and wait for the louvre (flap) to close.
  2. Open the front panel gently, the way the manual shows. Most units have a simple lift-and-hold panel. Do not force it.
  3. Slide the mesh filters out. Do not touch anything behind them.
  4. Wash the filters in plain lukewarm water with a little mild soap. Use a soft brush if needed. Do not use hot water or harsh chemicals.
  5. Let them dry completely in shade, not in direct sun, which can warp the plastic frame.
  6. Slide them back in and close the panel.

If the filters are very clogged, or you can see dust or black spots on the part behind them, that is a sign the coil needs a proper cleaning by a technician. Do not spray water into the unit yourself.

Step 2: Dry the inside with fan mode

Before you stop using the AC for the season, run it in fan mode (some remotes call it "dry" or "self-clean", but plain fan is fine) for about 20 to 30 minutes. This blows air across the coil and helps dry the moisture left from cooling.

Many newer Daikin, LG, Samsung, Panasonic and Haier models have an auto-clean or coil-dry feature that does something similar. Check your manual for the exact name on your model.

Step 3: Look around the outdoor unit, from the ground only

You do not need to climb or reach out of a window. If you can see the outdoor unit safely from the ground, a terrace with a proper railing, or a balcony where you do not need to lean out, check these things:

  • Leaves, plastic bags, cloth or packaging near the unit that block airflow.
  • Visible wasp or bird nests around or behind it.
  • Anything stored against it, such as boxes or water tanks.

Clear loose items from the area if you can do it without stretching. If a nest is on or inside the unit, or the unit is hard to reach, leave it for a technician.

Step 4: Switch off at the wall switch or isolator

Once you have stopped using the AC for the season, it helps to switch off the wall switch or isolator that powers it. Reasons:

  • Many ACs draw a small standby current even when "off".
  • Voltage fluctuations, which are common in many parts of Udaipur, especially around storms or changes in load, can reach a unit that is still connected.

Only use the normal wall switch or isolator meant for this. Do not open any panel or touch wiring. Also take the batteries out of the remote if you will not use it for a long time, so they do not leak.

Should you cover the outdoor unit?

This is a common question. A tight plastic sheet can trap moisture and invite pests, which makes things worse. If you want to protect it from dust, use a breathable cover that is made for AC outdoor units and can be fitted from the ground. If fitting it needs a ladder or leaning out, skip it. A little surface dust on the outside is far less harmful than an unsafe job.

What if your AC has a heating mode?

Some inverter ACs sold in India have a heat mode, and some are heat pumps, but many models are cooling-only. Check your remote for a sun symbol or the word "Heat" and confirm in your manual.

If your model does have it, a few points help:

  • Clean the filters before the first use of the season, since dust reduces warm airflow too.
  • Expect the outdoor unit to occasionally pause and drip water during a defrost cycle. That can be normal.
  • Heating in a small room usually works well. In a large hall or shop, ask a technician what to expect.

If you are unsure whether heating is meant to work on your unit, ask before running it for long hours.

What to leave to a technician

Some jobs look easy but are not safe or effective for a homeowner:

  • Deep cleaning of the indoor coil, blower and drain tray.
  • Cleaning the outdoor coil.
  • Checking the drain line and its slope.
  • Anything involving refrigerant, gas pressure, wiring, or the electronics.
  • Fixing an error code that appears on the display. You can look up what a code generally means in our error code lookup, but the fix itself needs a trained person.

If you noticed weak cooling, ice on the pipes, water dripping indoors, or strange noises last season, do not wait for April. Have it looked at now through AC repair and installation, when you can pick a convenient time rather than rush when the heat arrives.

Use it once in a while

If your AC will sit idle for a long stretch, switch it on in fan mode for 10 to 15 minutes every few weeks. This keeps the fan motor and louvre moving and shows you early if something is wrong, such as an unusual sound or a smell. Switch the isolator off again afterwards.

Use the quiet months to plan ahead

The cool season is also a good time to think about the next summer.

  • Replacing an old unit? Work out the right size first with the AC size calculator. An undersized AC runs flat out and still struggles in a 44 °C afternoon.
  • Shops, offices and hotels with several units can avoid the pre-summer scramble by setting up a regular service plan. See AMC plans for how that works.

A short checklist

  • Wash and dry the filters.
  • Run fan mode for 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Look over the outdoor area from the ground and clear loose items.
  • Switch off at the wall switch or isolator.
  • Remove the remote batteries if it will sit for months.
  • Note any problem you saw and get it checked before summer.

A few minutes of care now is cheaper and easier than fixing a clogged, damp or pest-damaged unit in the first heatwave.

Common questions

Should I keep my AC switched on at the plug during winter in Udaipur?

It is better to switch it off at the wall switch or isolator once you have stopped using it for the season. This avoids standby power draw and protects it from voltage spikes. Do not open any panel or touch wiring.

Can I wash my AC filters myself?

Yes. Switch the AC off, lift the front panel gently, slide the filters out, wash them in lukewarm water with mild soap, and dry them in shade before refitting. Leave the coil and everything behind the filter to a technician.

Is it okay to cover the outdoor unit?

Only with a breathable cover made for AC units that you can fit safely from the ground. Tight plastic sheets can trap moisture and attract pests. Never climb or lean out to fit a cover.

Does my AC have a heating mode?

Not all do. Many Indian split ACs are cooling-only. Look for a sun symbol or the word Heat on your remote and check your manual, or ask a technician if you are unsure.
